Paint, hardware and homemade signs made all the difference in this laundry room makeover! Giving you all my tips and tricks for this affordable transformation!

We recently moved into this house (I’m talking less than 2 weeks ago) and I knew a couple projects I wanted to knock out right away. The first was the laundry room. There was a reason I choose this room first. It was basically my “tester” room. It had the same maple cabinets as our kitchen and we knew we wanted them to go. I figured I might as well try painting these first and see how they look. I also needed a place for shoes and coats for my kids asap!

Here is the before:

Not horrible, just not our style. We have a bit of cabinet painting experience from our last home where we painted our kitchen cabinets. You can read more about that HERE. First I taped off the trim and cabinets and painted the walls. I used this color with the Behr Marquee Paint from Home Depot.

Benjamin Moore Beach Glass

Once that was complete I started on the cabinets. The first thing was to clean all the cabinets with TSP. Then I use Liquid Sander which will degloss the cabinets. I had every intention of using the Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 Primer but realized I had purchased the wrong one. After reading the back of the paint I purchased for the cabinets I decided to go ahead and paint without it.

This is the paint I used. It was the first time I used this type of paint for cabinets and I can tell you I will never use anything else again. This stuff is MAGIC.

Behr Urethane Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel

I did two coats on front and backs and waited 4 hrs in between coats. After the final coat I waited 24 hours to rehang. I will say I had a couple scratches when putting the cabinets back up but I was easily able to touch up those spots.

We then added new hardware. I found a great deal on these.

Now if you remember I told you that I picked this room as a “tester” but also because I needed a place for my kids to hang their coats! Well, in between coats on the cabinets I created this space on the opposite wall.

Wall Hooks // Similar Bench

It is just what I needed! The kids are able to hand up their coats and that makes me oh so happy!! I also made the sign with most items that I just had on hand! I’ll do a tutorial on that one day!

Laundry Room Signs

There you have!! The laundry room is complete!! We still aren’t sure what we are going to do about the wood trim but for right now it’s on to the next project…the half bath! Stay tuned!
